MA Traffic Twin is an interactive digital twin of the Massachusetts highway network. The roads are built from real OpenStreetMap geometry (pulled through the Overpass API) and drawn with MapLibre GL on OpenFreeMap basemap tiles. On top of that map it aggregates live public feeds — MassDOT GoTime travel times and GeoDOT open data, NOAA/NWS NEXRAD weather radar, and MBTA vehicle positions and service alerts — and shows each source’s health and last-update time, so you can see exactly what is live versus pending.
Use the LIVE / SIM toggle to switch between real feeds and a self-running simulation, then inject events like accidents, storms, or rush hour to watch congestion ripple across segments. The route planner runs Dijkstra shortest-path routing over the live road graph to compare alternates and travel times by hour, and layer toggles add sensors, exits, incidents, the NEXRAD radar, and an MBTA overlay. It is equal parts real-time monitor and what-if sandbox — a demonstration of how open transportation, weather, and transit data can be fused into one operating picture.
