About — MA NWSS Wastewater Surveillance

CDC NWSS Open Data · Wastewater Signals · MapLibre GL

This map visualizes wastewater disease surveillance for Massachusetts, drawn from the CDC’s National Wastewater Surveillance System (NWSS) open-data API. Sewage samples from treatment plants across the state are tested for viral genetic material, and the dashboard plots each collection site’s signal for SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19), Influenza A, and RSV — ranked by percentile strength with a recent 15-day trend. NWSS publishes on a weekly cadence, so this reflects the latest weekly readings rather than minute-to-minute data.

Switch between the map, an analytics table, COVID and Flu trend rankings, and a chart view; toggle pathogens on or off; and click a collection site for its detail. It is built on MapLibre GL with OpenFreeMap tiles — a working example of turning an open public-health feed into an at-a-glance read on where respiratory-virus signals are rising or falling across the state.
